I really wanted to take a minute and thank you all again for your amazing support. The amount of comments I received upon learning my diagnosis was amazing! You ladies are just fantastic and you make it really easy to remain positive.
Because I had my thyroid surgery last Friday, my mom has been in town for the week. We haven't done much because I've been so exhausted, but we have gone out for a few meals this week, mainly the last three days. Thursday night we decided to go out to a restaurant near my apartment called The Ocean Grille. It was our celebratory meal since while I had learned that I had cancer that day, I also learned that the cancer was gone and that there was no need for immediate surgery. As some of you may remember, I do not fancy myself a fish eater, but I've been trying to eat more fish as steak really isn't an option and there is really only so many times one can eat a hamburger. I decided on the baked chilean seabass. It was great! Came with polenta fries and this really yummy eggplant salsa. Mom and I also shared a dessert. It was an amazing apple crumb with to die for butter pecan ice cream. I had two bites and then put the fork down....I didn't want to but I forced myself.
Last night we went to the final night of the Cabaret Convention at the Rose Theater at Columbus Circle. The show wasn't great, but we went to dinner with some friends at a restaurant called Whym afterwards. The food was great. I opted for the burger this time but substituted the fries for the most amazing mashed sweet potatoes. I ate about 1/2 the burger and 1/4 of the sweet potatoes (ate some more of those yummy potatoes with some chicken for lunch today). Tonight we had our final meal out before my mom heads back to Arizona tomorrow morning. We went to a mediterranean restaurant called Bodrum, two of her former students work there. We ordered a pesto chicken pizza with fresh mozzarella and tomato. First attempt at pizza and I don't think I would try typical NYC pizza, but this was thin crust so I figured I was safe. I was, didn't get stuck, had one piece and felt satisfied.

The one thing that I've noticed this week that takes some getting used to is that I eat less than my mom. I have never in my life been in this position. She is gorgeous and thin and doesn't eat very much at all....and I eat less than she does. BIZARRE!!
One last thing, that fabulous restriction that I had is gone. I still have some restriction but all in all I'm not nearly where I was. I had peanut butter toast three times this week for breakfast which I hadn't been able to do at all prior to this week. I also find I'm hungrier faster in between meals. I have a fill scheduled on October 19th and was wrestling with whether I should call this Monday and see if I could get in. Still haven't completely decided what to do on this one yet.
Hope you are all having healthy and happy weeks!
It's great to hear that you're doing so well with the eating out. I'm still getting use to the idea.Ditto on the ading restriction. Eating the same as with the first fill, so might go back earlier for my 3rd as well.
ReplyDeleteNice that you're eating less that your mum, that must be some spin out!!
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the need for a fill.. I have all the same symptoms as you.. I need it and fast! I hope you're doing ok today.
Thinking of you

lol my validation was sumpro (guess that 'sums' all us banders up, at one stage or another!!
ReplyDeleteYour meals sound delish and you did so well with your choices. I eat way less too, and just do a doggie bag for the next day or two. I can't wait to have a meal with my folks and let them see how much less I eat.
ReplyDeleteMy sister is here, we went to lunch at Panera with my daughter and hers. They all got the pick two meal, I just got a bowl of black bean soup...nothing to drink. I've really been working on that lately and doing pretty good. Yeah for me!
YOu're doing great. With eating out you just have to put a lot of thought into it, work the band, and eat slow! Sounds like you did well in the situations you were put in. Hope you're feeling 100% soon!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the Ocean Grill. Used to live right nearby (now I'm a Jersey girl.)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that your cancer diagnosis came with a very hopeful upshot-- it sounds like things are quite manageable and that is great. I come from a cancer ridden family-- sister, breast, father, lung/ breast-- and they are alive and kicking!!
Anyhow: good luck and I'll keep checking in!
Vanessa
It sounds like you are feeling better & on the road to recovery. It's great that your mom has been there for you through all of this. Treasure that relationship. It sounds like you made healthy choices when you went out to eat. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteHey you, glad you're feeling better and got some time out with your Mom. Sounds like the perfect night out ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time with eating out still, too. But you did great! Good choices and good portion sizes.
I'm in need of a fill, too, btw.
Have a nice day off!
