Now on to the title of this post. One Day University was pretty cool. They advertise it as "The Best Professors teaching their best classes". I started the day with Catherine Sanderson from Amherst College. The course was "The Power of the Mind Over Body". It was AMAZING! First of all, her delivery was fantastic and her material was really great. She spoke on three topics: 1) Eating 2) Pain 3) Relationships. She discussed three studies regarding food. The first was the soup study where people were giving a bowl of soup and asked to eat until they weren't hungry. The other group had a special bowl where the soup would continuously refill (without their knowledge). Both groups reported stopping when they were full and both groups felt that they averaged the same amount of soup. In reality, the group with the never ending soup bowl ate two to three times more than the other group. The other study used college kids. They were invited to a movie and randomly given different sized containers of popcorn ranging from small to giant. All were told they could refill as many times as they wanted. Again, those with the giant sized popcorn ate two to three times more. Even when the popcorn was set out for five days to get stale. CRAZY!! What it showed me is that we do ourselves a disservice when we use huge plates. I'll stick to using my salad plates going forward. The third study was sad. It's called the Snickers study. They gave college girls a questionnaire that asked which thing they would be most embarrassed buying from the grocery store:
- Condoms
- Pregnancy Test
- Tampons
- Snickers bar
A much larger percentage of women chose the Snickers bar as the thing they would most embarrassed to buy. So sad.
There were so many other amazing things she taught, but if I covered them all this blog post would be seventeen pages long! Google her though, amazing lady!
The second class I took was great as well. It was about the Power of Resiliance, why some people fail while others succeed. Two of my other courses, The Genius of DaVinci and one on Classical Music were not good. My last course was about the movies and taught by a former NYU professor. He was a great storyteller and it was a nice point on which to end.
I came home (skipped out on dinner, we were all tired), took Lucy for a walk and then did week three/day two of couch to 5k. Tomorrow I have brunch with Catherine which I'm really looking forward to and then off to buy a dress for Vegas. Hopefully I'll have something to show you guys!
p.s. Still 200 this morning, but I'm not worried. I'll get there!
Wow! your day sounds awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI watched the Haiti event last night after I got home from being out... The sangrias I drank did not help my emotional state as I was watching! I was bawling!!! There's so much more I wish I could do! I Loved, loved loved JT... I immediately downloaded the song he sang this morning. JHud was amazing as well!
Thank you for sharing, that was interesting and informative to read.
ReplyDeleteI didn't want the telethon b/c we had family here, sounds like it was a great service to the Haiti disaster. Hope they raised a ton of money that will go to great use.
Some of the nurses I work with are going to Haiti on Friday. I am amazed at the outpouring of help everyone has given. It always gives me hope when people people reach out so selflessly to each other.
ReplyDeleteSounds like such a great day! Glad you had fun. I'm eagerly awaiting the Thinnerware I ordered, which is much smaller plates and bowls. In the meantime, I've been eating from my kids' plates. Of course, I've been stuck at the same weight for six days but hey I'm not stressing about that. Not one bit. Heh. Have fun with Catherine, and enjoy your Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThat is sad about that questionare..whoa.
ReplyDeleteI love JT as well..the telethon was so sad, but so great. It raised almost 60 million!
