Exercising to Combat Stress

I've heard the old adage that exercise = endorphins which help to combat stress. Never really bought into it, but I heard it. WELL, after yet another stressful day and not much sleep I decided that I HAD to work out when I got home tonight. Typically I'd come up with excuses:
  • Ugh, it's already 7pm, by the time I get home it will be too late to work out
  • I haven't been able to sleep, working out will be too hard
  • I don't have to work out tonight, it's three times a week, I'll just do it tomorrow
WELL, the new me wasn't playing that. I decided that I was just going to do it and get it over with. And guess what? TOTALLY helped with my stress. You may be asking..."What's with all the stress?" Well, work is just insane. The organization is really suffering and as a leader I feel a great deal of responsibility to make my people happy. They are all suffering, we are all underpaid and working with really stressed clients that like to take out their anger, stress and frustration on us. This has resulted in two really difficult client situations for me and my team. Each day is something different with one of them. Add this to the disengagement and unhappiness of staff and well, it just sucks. The only bright spot is that I've been working with the President of my parent company which has enabled me to at least have a "mentor" of sorts to be learning from, something I've been without for about a year now. So to combat the stress and in an effort to maybe get some sleep tonight and to keep my goal of finishing C25k, I ran. Week one of C25k complete. ;o)

In other news, I have a job interview next week. It's for a position in Talent Management for a financial services company here in NYC. The financial services part is a bit freaky as hello crappy economy, recession, bailouts, but the idea of looking into something different is inspiring right now. So, we'll see what happens.

Last thing. Everyone has chosen a word for 2010. I've decided on mine, but it's a two-word phrase. BE PRESENT. I want to ensure that I'm being present with my team at work. I want to be sure I'm being present with my family. Being present for myself with exercise and just being present in life in general.

One last cool thing. I'm watching Mercy right now on NBC. The song playing during the opening scene is from my friend Keith's band. I just love it when cool things happen to my friends. If you get a chance, check out Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, they are GREAT!! xoxo

  1. Kudos to you for working out today, I have blown off the gym for 2 days due to some low level funk I have going on. Running a low temp, headache, body aches...I hate this crud!! I will never be ready for my 5k if this keeps up. Good luck with the job interview, hey at least you can get one of those...I can't even manage that right now. Best of luck to you with that!

  2. Good for you for getting to the gym. It is truly amazing how much better you feel after you go. Getting there is sometimes the hardest part. On the nights I am not really feeling like going, I talk myself into it by saying I'll go for 15 minutes and if I hate it or am too tired I'll go home. Many years later, I have never gone home after 15 minutes. Exercise is my Godsend. In my sometimes very stress filled job, it's what keeps me sane. Laughter helps too but I don't recommend laughing to yourself while you're at the gym...they may ask you to enroll in the pink, padded room class...lol.

  4. Yes the endorphines really do help. I almost didnt work out tonight because I hurt my foot. I can walk on it but not real great, I decided to walk on the treadmill for 20 mins and I was fine. I feel better about working out, it makes me feel like I'm getting back on track. Good luck to you on your job interview!!

Love your word(s). Hopefully they will steer you right - they seem to be so far. Getting to the exercise is no mean feat considering how tired and stressed you are: but you did it!!

  6. When I am working out, I have my music going and the world around me ceases to exist. I think that disconnection for even a short time, helps renew us!

  7. Wow you really are stressed. The workouts do work though. It is just routine. I feel a bit of a fool but what does C25k mean. I've seen it posted by a lot of people and can't seem to make out the shortform (I'm in the learning phase!). Keep it up. You will be glad you did.
