Is This Really Me?

Went to eat with Serena tonight. She really wanted a burger, so back to Five Napkin Burger we went. Such a great restaurant. I had a small handful of fries with some baked beans and some pinot grigio. She had a yummy burger! Anyway, on the way home we went to Banana Republic (it's on the corner of my block). I took a pair of 14's and an XL cardigan into the dressing room. I tried them on, zipped them up and showed Serena. She thought they looked great, I thought they were five pounds too tight. She suggested I take a picture, this is it.

Seriously?? Is that me??
It's crazy to see that and think, that girl is too thin to be me. I mean, I know it's me, and I've done a lot of work to be that girl, but OMG...that's me.

Had a few interesting moments this week and wondering if you face it in your daily lives too. First was a colleague of mine mentioned that "You know a lot of us have been in therapy for the way you eat". Needless to say, she's not a great friend of mine. Anyway, she cited the day during a huge meeting that we had over lunch where I ate hummus, crackers and then had a cookie. Apparently she thinks I eat too little. Then another friend (who reads this blog...I do love you) tells me that she worries I'm not getting enough nutrition (e.g., fruits/veggies).  I actually think that I eat a normal amount of veggies. I completely agree on the fruit thing, but it's the winter in NYC and produce sucks. Nevertheless, I went to the grocery store and my pregnant friend loaded my cart with the makings of fruit smoothies and I intend to have one in the morning for breakfast. Do any of you face this? I think that our friends who watched us clean our plates and eat a ton of food are now just questioning how we can eat so little. I'm still eating 1200 calories a day. I eat healthy food, I'm certainly not eating tons of high fat, gross fast food. A typical day for me is:

Breakfast: Iced coffee/zone bar
Lunch: hummus and crackers or greek yogurt with granola
Snack: zone bar or nuts
Dinner: chili or some other type of meal
Snack: peppermint patties (typically two)

Maybe I'll start trying to have more fruit (insert smoothie for zone bar).

Does any of this seem unreasonable or do our friends just need to get used to the new "us", the girls who eat less than they do and no longer finish off their french fries?

  1. First of all, you look amazing! I love your comparison photo.

I think its a little of both. I think friends and family need to adjust to our band life as much as we do. Its harder for them because they don't have these blogs!

  2. It is you and you look great(and have worked hard). I like the pants - also that's a huge NSV because I think BR runs small.
I think your friends need to worry and get used to the changes.

  3. I try to eat some fruit each day, I think substitution would not hurt. We want to get some of our nutrients from fresh when we can ;)

  4. I think that it is our friends that need to get used to the way we eat. I do find that fruits and veggies are an issue for me. My typical day looks alot like your day and I had someone remark on my lack of fruits and salads. I am trying to get more in by adding fruit to my protein shakes and eating a salad every now and then but it's hard. By the way I am sending you a box of clothes but girl you look too skinny for my stuff. If they don't fit just pass 'em on!!

  5. woot woot! I hope you bought those jeans! They look amazing on you. Yes I deal with the same thing, the co worker that sits next to me the best friend who goes out to dinner with me all the time. Does your co worker know about the band?

  6. Jenny! You look amazing! You are my hero!
All of my co-workers know all about the band and they basically just comment on what I'm going to eat vs how much or the nutritional value (if that makes sense)....
    Oh, I will be in NYC 5/20 - 5/23!!!!

  7. You look AMAZING in those jeans. And the cardigan is borderline too big! What a fantastic NSV.

I haven't had anyone worry over my food intake, but I do find it difficult to get in enough fruits. Veggies seem OK, and remember hummus is kind of a veggie. If you squint... ;)

  8. Also, you could eat your hummus with baby carrots or some other veggies. That might help up your intake.

  9. Jenny, you look awesome and I hope you bought those jeans!

If your aunt decides on MX, please let her know that I'd love to answer any questions she has. My first preference was to have the surgery here but I do not regret for a second doing what I did and I'd do it all over again!

  10. First, you look so amazing. I mean, literally, SKINNY. And beautiful. Love your blog too.

What is funny is that right before my wedding I was about your weight and still unhappy with my size. I couldn't see how great I looked (you are a testament to that!). Now, I will appreciate it so much more on the way back down!!! WELL DONE!

  11. Oh, one more thing. I am on a quest to find the easiest way to group pictures together....what method do you use? So far Gen's suggestion to use Picasa seems easiest but you never know!

  12. SKINNY! When I was in BR I tried on the 14s and I could not believe they fit. I even tried on a size 12 skirt in J. Crew and it was tight, but fit. And I thought -- Is that me? How did that happen? So I know the feeling!

Your menu sounds just like mine when I have good restriction. Except I eat more for lunch. I usually have an Amy's or Kashi frozen entree for lunch (around 300 cals). I definitely do not get in enough veggies or fruit. I usually have fruit in my oatmeal, but that is it!

    YOU LOOK AMAZING! Enjoy it!

  13. You look amazing! I was wondering if you have tried V8 juice for the veggies? I was thinking about it when I have surgery.

  14. Jenny... YOU'RE TINY. I can't get over that side-by-side shot, you're amazing. You're eating at the low end of the bandster spectrum, but I definitely think you're doing well. That's how I've been eating. Fruits and veggie's come as snacks, it's often the only way I find room for them.

  15. Is that what 187 looks like? HOLY COW! That's INSPIRING!! You look fantastic. I do have one friend who seems to comment on what I eat - or least seems to pay attention to it. She struggles with her weight too, so I think that has something to do with it. I think it will always be this way.
But - wow - cool shot - glad you took it!!

  19. Babes,
Look at you - you like like another whole woman. Just gorgeous and so thin!!

I hear you on the friend eating problem. I get the same. They worry we are now NOT eating enough and if we PB? Well, those that don't know about the band are sure I'm bulimic lol. I just assure them I'm not.... and most times now fess up about the band. It starts another whole conversation ..

  20. You look great! Amazing change, though it is funny how we are always last to see it ourselves.

re the eating, I think you need to step away from the friends' worries, so long as you and your doctor are ok with what you are eating that is all that matters.

I know I am getting far less veggies in now than I did pre band, cos I used to eat loads of them, and don't have the physical space any more (unless potato chips count as veg and I suspect they don't!) But my blood counts are great, so I'm not going to worry.
    Love

  21. WOW. You look like you have always been a skinny person :) Congratulations! I love your blog and have been following it for a while.
I too have difficulty getting in the fruit and veg, and I think the morning smoothies are a great idea :)

  22. Where is your tum and bum???? You look amazing!!!! I only have one friend who has commented on how litle I eat and of course my kids. But if you are following your surgeons guidelines and basic healthy eating...who cares what they say??? Keep up the great work

  23. You look beautiful! Hot diggity... wish I could pull that off! As for the friend thing, thankfully mine haven't said a word yet... you need to do what you know is right - if possible, ignore them - and as for the beeatch at work, tell her to mind her own business and go back to therapy for other things! Geesh... In all seriousness, for me the fruit/veggie thing is totally seasonal - when there is produce that is plentiful, I eat it. When there isn't, i don't... good luck! You really do look phenomenal!

  24. Wow, Jen you look so beautiful! Amazing! Fantastic! You continue to inspire me.

  25. OMG you are soooooo skinny...You really do not look like you need to loose anymore weight. Your stomach is concave!!!

  26. First - 'TINY' was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the photo on my blog list! (Go you!)
Second - I also think your friends need to adjust to your eating not the other way around.
It makes them nervous. I remember having to eat with people when I was always starving. A normal sized friend would order a normal meal and eat 1/2. I would always stop eating when she did b/c I didn't want to seem like a pig. Maybe even 'normal' sized women feel they should stop when you do so *they* don't feel piggish. Know what I mean? Not that they are by any stretch..but let's face it, we eat freakishly small portions and it MUST make them a little self-conscious of how much they are eating.

I need more fruit too - I can't wait till it's in season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. you are an inspiration. amazing.

i think people are so accustomed to how we are "sipposed" to lose weight that they don't understand the band basics.

    ReplyDelete
  28. These are the comments of unintentional sabateurs... oh well. Weight is a big issue for people and they cannot understand that your way of eating is working for you.
Honestly: I think I would be a good idea to add some fruit or veggies in on a daily basis--salsa is a veggie, so you could add that to chili, or have a V8!
    You look FABU.
    :-)

  29. Oh my gosh. A side shot and for real, you look like what I would imagine a size 6 looks like!

I can understand people worrying about what we eat. But they don't see us eat throughout the course of the day ya know? You may have just had some hummus, crackers, and a cookie at that meeting, but who knows what you ate at home. I eat a much more well balanced meal at home. I always play it safe at meetings, etc...in case the awful PB happens. But it is a big shift from the way we used to eat I guess.

I think for the one that tried to insinuate your eating resembled an eating disorder, that there is just some jealousy there.
