So, realistically the food in Munich = not so bad. Finding something you can eat while banded = tough! I honestly don't understand how everyone in Munich isn't 300 pounds! I feel like the food here is so incredibly heavy and really salty. That being said, I've had some yummy meals.
Details on the plane ride: I'm definitely smaller!! Fit in my seat just great and for the first time in as long as I can remember I buckled my seat belt and actually had to make it tighter. Meaning that the person sitting in my seat before me was bigger than me = RARE! I also slept quite a bit of the flight. I took two dramamine before take-off. I was really disappointed that my flight had no individual tv's. Honestly on an international flight, I think it's bogus if they aren't there. I fell asleep about an hour after take off, skipped dinner, just kept sleeping. I woke up about two hours before we landed and ate some breakfast. I had taken Sarah's advice and bought some cashews in the airport (thanks Sarah). I had eaten some of those at one point in the middle of the night when I woke up. Breakfast was a chewy granola bar, a roll and a piece of cheese. Oh and some fruit cocktail. I ate the granola bar, the cheese and a couple of pieces of watermelon.
When I arrived at the hotel, I slept for an hour and then went into the office. I arrived just in time to see two of my colleagues headed out for lunch so I went with them. Luckily we went to a soup place. I order a goulash of sorts which was really a beef (small eraser size pieces) with potatoes. Very yummy! I skipped the bread and had about 1/4 of the soup. Last night we went to a typical brewhouse for dinner. I had schnitzel. For those of you who don't know, it's essentially fried pork (yep you heard that right), with a side of potato salad. It was yummy and I only ate about 1/3 of it. The appetizer was pretzels (soft and doughy) with some camabert cheese spread. I skipped the pretzels much to my dismay, but I was too afraid I would get stuck. I also skipped the beer, opted for pinot grigo and water (with no gas....no carbonation).
Ate breakfast at the hotel this morning, yogurt with some granola and a piece of brie with ham. For lunch we went to another brewhouse (what can I say, it's Germany). I ordered....wait for it....begins with Schn...ends with tzil. This one was a cordon bleu. I had about 1/4 of it, was yummy but again salty and fried! Tonight, one of my colleagues (who doesn't know I had surgery) actually said "Did you like your lunch?" Clearly he recognized that I didn't eat much of it. I opted for pork again tonight, but it was not fried, was actually very tender and juicy. The tough part is the menu is basically this at each restaurant I've been to:
Schnitzel - fried pork or veal
Sausage - ooh that's a fun one for bandsters
Spatzle - essentially egg noodles that was my one and only sliming episode so far (couple of weeks ago) so I won't be trying them again
Beef - typically boiled
I've avoided beer and pretzels. Ate small portions and have drank a ton of water (with no gas) however a good deal of it is staying inside of me....that's the salt talking! Tomorrow I'm not working...plan to sleep in and then go sightseeing. I'm meeting a colleague of mine for dinner and we're having Italian (we've heard a rumor that there are very good Italian restuarants in Germany).
Anxious to get home and back to my routine (e.g., weighing myself multiple times per day). It's very bizarre to not know what I weigh right now....
Hope you are all well. Can't wait to get caught up on your blogs. It's 2:44am here and I've been up since 7am, so I think it's time to get some sleep!
xoxo

Hi Jenny,
ReplyDeleteFirst - congratulations on such a healthy change! My name is Susan and I have decided that a lap band is for me. Blogs such as yours are so inspiring -and so helpful in understanding what life is like with the band. I too have Cigna insurance. I'm going to a seminar with my surgeon of choice next week but I have read about Cigna's 6 mo diet requirement. I'm so bummed because I've been on a diet for about 20 years now. Any info about your experience with Cigna and how you got thru the 6 mo wait would be great!
Jenny, good luck with the food in Germany. I'm enjoying my vacation with my friend and really loving my time off. The weather here is a bit yucky, but the best part is being with my friends.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with your food choice over there! You are such an inspiration to me! You've been so good your entire journey so far...how the heck do you do it?! Gosh, I seem to go through spouts of being spot on and then weeks of not being able to get it together lately. It's so frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI flew for the first time since surgery just a few weeks ago and I actually brought along the seat belt extension I had purchased for myself about 1 1/2 ago after an embarrassing flight of having to ask for one. I don't know what I was going on in my head to where I thought I would need it on my most recent flight since I sat right down in the seat and buckled right up with room to spare! Needless to say...that seatbelt extension I bought has since made its way to the goodwill pile!
Good luck on the rest of your trip!
Yay on fitting into that seat so well - and your eating in Germany. I remember being in Germany many years ago and like you.. all I remember eating was schnitzel.. oh, and cheese and meats and heavy, heavy bread .. for breakfast!! All I wanted was toast or cereal lol.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are having a great working vacation. I have always wanted to visit Germany, & we will someday! Can't wait to find out how you did weight wise once you return & are able to weigh yourself again.
ReplyDeleteSounds like some good NSV's Jenn!!! Enjoy your trip, and don't forget that between the salt and water and flying, you'll probably be up a bit - don't freak out over it though, because clearly you're doing everything right! Enjoy the rest of your trip!
ReplyDeleteAwesome news re: the flight, that would be a big source of anxiety for me.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the food is tasty. I was in Germany for a while when I was 19. I probably have such bad memories of the food because I was broke as a joke and drank more than I ate....
Gosh, you are doing so well with food choices, etc. I would like to miniaturize you and carry you around in my purse for a while, you are just that good!!
I hope you continue having fun and enjoying the trip and that you encounter a cut of meat that is not fried to within an inch of it's life sometime soon.....
Having room in the airplane seat is the biggest NSV! Congrats! I had a bit of room and I'm not as far along as you!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine eating in Germany right now. I'm vegetarian and it's one of the few places I've traveled where i really had a tough time finding anything to eat at all, and that was BEFORE the band!
Hope you enjoyed your trip overall! it's always fun to go someplace new, esp if the company is paying for it...
