Went to Whole Foods with my neighbor today. Turns out that there is a new - HUGE - one about 10 blocks from my place. It's beautiful, all neat and clean. I just picked up a few things. Some peanut butter zone bars, some mashed potatoes and gravy (for dinner), some of the most amazing honey roasted peanut butter that you make yourself - SO COOL - and a bottle of pinot grigio. I had decided that I was going to do two things today. 1) Get some ice cream. I've only had it twice since surgery (not counting when I had thyroid surgery and had to eat it in order to mask the taste of crushed vicodin) 2) Going to buy a Diet Dr. Pepper and drink it.
I bought some B&J Chunky Monkey ice cream (it's banana flavored ice cream with chunks of chocolate and walnuts). So excited to have a scoop of it tonight after dinner. It's also nice to not have the desire to eat the entire pint. I truly just want a scoop.
I'm on mushies today and tomorrow. I definitely have some serious restriction. I had a greek yogurt for breakfast, went down fine. Made 3/4 of a cup of refried beans for lunch with cheese, could only get down 1/4 of it, and then an hour later had another 1/4 of it. I don't usually eat just mashed potatoes - usually couple it with protein, but tonight it will just be mashed potatoes and gravy. We'll see how well that goes down. I feel restricted when I drink water - can't gulp and after a couple of sips I feel it going down. So strange. I'm hoping I'm not too tight. Can't tell for sure yet. I feel good, so we'll see.
So, I mentioned that I bought a Diet Dr. Pepper. Dr. F told me to have it over ice and let it sit for five minutes to let some of the bubbles calm down. I waited for about eight and then took a sip. I felt every bubble hit my tongue, the roof of my mouth, the sides. It felt like mini explosions in my mouth. I swallowed, didn't hurt at all, just had a bit of the gurgling which I get with water. I took another sip and then promptly tossed it all down the drain. Turns out that I hate the feeling of the carbonation in my mouth. It was just awful. Figure that instead of getting used to drinking it again, I should just quit while I'm ahead.

Interesting about the diet Dr. Pepper. I was anticipating reading about how great it tasted after all this time. That makes me feel better about not having my fix of Diet Coke anymore. I'm just going to tell myself I wouldn't like it anyway :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your mentality. You're over the addiction of soda so just do away with it for good. "They" say there's some correlation to weight gain even in diet soda anyways so just don't give your body the chance to like it! :)
ReplyDeleteGood job!
Sounds like your restriction will be really good! I felt the water early on with this 2nd fill, not as much now except in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI thought you would say the Dr. Pepper was awesome! I have not had any soda at all, except the one time I accidentally took a swig.
Enjoy that B&J - isnt it awesome knowing you're not going to eat the whole thing!
I had not had even a small sip of soda in about 4 months. When I read your other post I thought COOL! Last night my daughter had a diet Pepsi over ice that had been sitting around a while...I took a big drink thinking how much I would like it...NOT SO MUCH! tasted yucky, I am over it (not over coffee however)
ReplyDeleteWish we had a whole foods or Trader Joe's but I guess I am lucky to have what I do in my tiny town!
You are doing so great!
Well, doesn't that suck lol, you finally get the go ahead for carbonated drinks and you don't like it. Isn't it incredible how our tastes are changing - like a mini-miracle. xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm totally obsessed with Diet Dr. Pepper! Usually it's just other Texans I find who are also obsessed (I recall your goodbye poem!). Of course, back in the day, I would've said that I never would be able to give up real Dr. Pepper and finally I did. Now I can't drink that at all. I guess I can see how you would lose the taste for it, but I'm not there yet. Where is this new Whole Foods btw? Being a vegetarian, I LOVE Whole Foods! And I used to work at their "home" store in Austin in college and they are just as good a company to work for.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your story about the DP. I have not had soda and intend to stay away from it so it helps hearing it wasn't all that great.
ReplyDeleteI agree your mentality ROCKS ! Doesnt it feel awesome to have that control and say I just want a scoop and no more and be able to just throw out the rest of the Dr. Pepper !! OMG YOUR ROCK JEN !!!
ReplyDeleteThat is really awesome that your restriction is good! I feel like I"m really close. I have Coke every so often and it doesn't bother my mouth but I do feel it in my stomach. Almost like gassy. So I don't do it very often.
