Well, I had my second fill today. This time with Frank the nurse. I told him about the experience I had last time when Anne had to stick me three times before she was able to locate my port. She was VERY nice about it, I just figured it was because I was swollen. Frank mentioned she was really good at fills so he hoped he would be able to locate it easily. Well...he couldn't. He stuck me twice and just hit plastic. So he decided to pull my esophogram up on the screen to visualize my port. Once he saw that we decided he would try a third time....nothing but plastic. He was so apologetic...I felt bad! He mentioned that there was only one other occasion when he had to stick someone three times and it turned out the patient's port was flipped....WHAT?!? He assured me that this was worst case scenario and stepped out to get Dr. Kurian. Just as a point of information....she did Al Roker and Star Jones surgeries, so I felt like I was in pretty good hands! She was amazing...so nice, held my hand and called me "love". And after two more sticks she got it. As it turns out my port is tipped towards my pelvis. Now that we know this and they've noted it, I'm hoping that this will be easier going forward. Today, even with five sticks, was fine. Didn't hurt all that badly (maybe a 3 on the pain scale). I've lost 7 pounds since my last appointment on September 4th so that was good. He gave me another 1.5 cc's so I'm at 5.5 total in a 10cc band. I've had 1/2 of a small jamba juice and am feeling pretty full. I'm flying to Boston tomorrow for work (in the car at 5:30am...ugh ugh ugh), so he didn't want to be too aggressive. Will be interesting to fly tomorrow - first time since surgery. Frank told me that I shouldn't drink tomorrow morning before I get to Boston since flying can cause the band to be tighter, and that I should just have a cup of coffee or tea once I get there. I'm on liquids tonight and tomorrow and then mushies for two days. Hoping I have great restriction!!
For those of you that have flown since having the band....do you notice a difference?

no diff flying at all!
ReplyDeleteAh... the twisted port... I have one! I don't think mine is completley flipped, but it is definitely tipped - had to get me to lay down to access it. Hopefully it won't be so hard next time, because I NEED A FILL! Too loose from what they took out before...
ReplyDeleteAnd no diff flying that I've noticed, but I don't do it often.
Congrats on the second fill- that must be fun!
ReplyDelete(I really do consider fills and the resulting restriction fun nowadays!)
A lady in my support group has an issue with her band being tighter when she flew, she found out the hard way before anyone told her it could happen. She was headed to Miami. Thought she'd nibble on the complimentary peanuts and what'ya know, one damn peanut goes down unchewed and she's stuck! Couldn't PB it for the entire flight. It then caused inflammation, the stomach swelled and she couldn't get food or drink down for three days so she had to get an unfill.
So weird how it's all different.
Me, I'd probably be the person who got tighter on planes... Note self: avoid peanutson planes.
Have fun in Boston Jen!
I've heard people say that flying makes them tighter, but I fly quite often and have never really noticed a difference. I do notice that I am tighter in the mornings, so I will just have a tea or something so as not to be uncomfortable on the flight.
